THE HISTORIC CASA VERDUGO
This magnificent Mission Style Revival home featuring Craftsmen details was the renowned Casa Verdugo Restaurant, which long ago was one of the most famous restaurants in the West, a destination for visitors from around the world.
The home was designed in 1907 by architect Charles E. Shattuck for Charles and Piedad Yorba Sowl. Piedad was a well-known Chef De Cuisine for the Sepulveda Adobe. Later after a dispute that resulted in the termination of the restaurant’s lease the Sowls reopened the elegant restaurant now known as Casa Verdugo in their home from 1910 to 1921. In 1939 the home had a second distinguished owner Johston McCulley, an author and screenwriter who wrote hundreds of stories, fifty novels, numerous screenplays for film and television, and the creator of the character Zorro. Famed silent movie director Mack Sennett filmed one of his movies "The Manicure Lady" here in 1911.
Casa Verdugo has beautiful features that are still present today. As you approach to the front steps of this single story character home you are greeted by the colorful garden drawing you in. Then up to an arcade verandah that runs the length of the entire east facing side of the home. The wooden Pergola was used for dining in the days of Casa Verdugo when tuxedo clad waiters would serve the guests delicious authentic Spanish meals a top an elegant setting of linen cloth tables adorned with fresh flowers, crystal, and silver flatware. The front door opens to a grand foyer, flanked by the formal living room and the gracious dining room (both of which were used back in the day of Casa Verdugo as the Green and Red dining rooms). These rooms maintain the original Cherry-Inlaid Oak Floors, Wood Beamed Ceilings and Wide Wood Baseboards, Door and Window Casings, Chair and Plate Rails and some original light fixtures. The dining room also features a board-and-batten wainscot and built-in storage cabinet with a leaded glass door.
The home was originally designed in a U-Shape plan with all the rooms arranged around a center courtyard patio which has since been enclosed. The original arcaded corridors to either side give access to the kitchen and bedrooms, while arched gateway at the West end, crowned by the Espadańas, leads to the landscaped garden. This unique 50 foot long courtyard, boasts a 19 foot high cathedral ceiling, gable roof, clerestory window and Super Saltillo Terra Cotta pavers – also known as “Pinkies” for their distinctive Kiln fired color. The original wrought iron gateway that was previously located in front of the French doors, are now the gateway leading to the driveway. This fabulous open setting makes for great entertaining.
Throughout nearly every room of the home there is an abundance of light entering through double hung windows or French doors that look out onto lush landscaping and fruit trees.
Expansive eat-in kitchen was planned for “more than one cook in the kitchen”. Featuring generous storage with roll out cabinets and vertical tray storage for easy access, separately located sinks, Wolf range/stove, extensive storage and counter space. Hand painted tile murals by French artist Dominique Sardel are seen throughout kitchen. The murals make working in the kitchen a joyful experience. This big kitchen has been the perfect large gathering space – the “Heartbeat of the Home” with lots of working stations. Located between the kitchen and dining room is the rare find Butler’s Pantry with marble counter, original doors, massive original storage cabinets with locking brass fixtures and drawer pulls.
All bedrooms feature high ceilings and crown molding. Large master bedroom with attached on-suite includes a furniture style hand painted double sink vanity with marble top and porcelain sink, Warma towel rack, oversized Whirlpool therapeutic jetted tub with waterfall and stall shower both finished with jade tone “Ming Green” marble and marble floor, crystal chandelier and wall scones complete the luxury spa relaxation experience.
